South shore beauty spot gets tribute to Cup Match camper
A bench at Chaplin Bay was dedicated to a woman who camped with her family at the Warwick park during Cup Match for more than 60 years.
Friends and relatives of the late Lillian Angeline Alick (née Lovell) gathered to dedicate the bench, located directly at the family’s campsite, on July 31.
Denise Ash, Ms Alick’s granddaughter, explained: “The idea came about when the Showers family, who used to camp in the spot next to the Alick camp, dedicated a bench to their grandmother who also passed away.”
Jermaine DeSilva, Ms Alick’s grandson, and his friend Omar Douglas drilled a memorial plaque into the bench and Maria Seaman, of Shekinah Worship Centre, performed the dedication.
The plaque on Lillian Angeline Alick’s memorial bench reads:
“In loving Memory of Lillian Angeline Alick
“Whose Dedication to faith and family inspired the family to camp with her at this site for 60 plus years during Cup Match.
“We still camp here in her memory. May you feel her love and prayers as you sit here today.
“Will our grandchildren remember for us what we conserved or protected, or for what we let slip away?’”
The family reflected after the dedication on the many previous Cup Matches at the site and other loved ones who had died.
Ms Ash added: “This gesture in no way will replace the promise of a continued effort to keep the family tradition of camping out during the two-day holiday going.”
She said that for Ms Alick’s firstborn grandson, Dennis DeSilva, “the world will pass before he lets that happen”.
The Lovell and Alick families thanked Dr Seaman and everyone else who made the dedication possible.
