Labour Day calls us to build ‘a fairer Bermuda’

Dawn Simmons, the chairwoman of the Progressive Labour Party, released the following statement in recognition of Bermuda’s workers on Labour Day:

“Fellow Bermudians,

“As a labour party, our first commitment is to the workers of our community. Every day, we seek new ways to put more money in your pocket, bring down the cost of living and bring greater fairness to every person and place across our island.

“Labour Day is a reminder to us, and to all, that the rights we enjoy at work, the laws that protect workers … did not come to us by chance. It came through decades of protest, agitation and organisation to make something as simple as having a weekend off a reality.

“This Labour Day, we remember the path it took to get us here and we look forward to more progress, more rights and more protections for our workers.

“Labour Day also calls us to keep building a fairer Bermuda.”

Progressive Labour Party pledge

• Protecting the dignity of work by raising the minimum wage on September 1

• Strengthening healthcare and retirement security so our seniors can live with comfort and respect

• Investing in skills, apprenticeships and opportunities so our young people don’t have to give up their dreams

• Supporting small businesses and the workers who power them

• Ensuring safe workplaces where every person is respected

“Our party’s values are simple, a fairer Bermuda for all of us.

“We want each of us to be able to pursue our goals without barriers stacked against us.

“We want each of us to have the opportunity to learn, earn and build a future right here at home.

“We want each of us to be secure in the belief that when you work hard, you can take care for your family, retire with dignity and weather life’s storms.

“On this Labour Day, let us celebrate how far we’ve come and commit to the work ahead.

“To every worker, we commit to continue listening to you and fighting for you.”
