Executives from the Bermuda Industrial Union examined continuing renovations at the island’s largest hotel last week.

A statement said union members toured the Fairmont Southampton on August 28 and that renovations at the property were progressing steadily.

Chris Furbert, the BIU president, explained: “At the main hotel, demolition is largely complete and renovations are under way.

“Exterior improvements, including roof repairs and replacement, are ongoing and plaster demolition of the hotel façade is substantially complete across all wings.”

He added that beachside facilities are being constructed on the property, the roof of the Ocean Club has been replaced and a permit to build a new wastewater treatment plant has been secured.

The comments came after it was revealed that 179 new work permits have been issued for the project over the past two years and that 150 Bermudians, spouses of Bermudians or permanent residents have been involved in redeveloping the property.

In its statement, the BIU said that there were more than 250 workers on site and that since the renovation started, “more than 400 skilled individuals have been involved, including more than a dozen Bermudian businesses”.

Mr Furbert said: “During the construction phase of this project there have been real opportunities for Bermudians through direct employment with the principal contractors and through the various subcontractors that also hire Bermudians.

“This is demonstrated by the results of the jobs fair held on August 21, where 53 Bermudians submitted applications for employment opportunities made possible through this project.”

He added: “The BIU has consistently advocated for the hiring of Bermudians by contractors and remains steadfast in this commitment.

“We look forward to seeing the next phase of work and continuing our support for this important hospitality investment in Bermuda’s future that will have a lasting impact on our economy.”

The Ministry of Economy and Labour told The Royal Gazette last week that 184 workers were on site at the Fairmont Southampton project.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place at the property in November and the resort is expected to reopen next year.
