Belco: trim trees to avert ‘preventable’ outages

Belco has urged property owners to ensure trees are kept cut back from power cables.

It came as the utility company released a video highlighting the importance of tree trimming, to be promoted across media platforms, including its social media accounts.

Belco said trees falling on power lines were the island’s top culprit in power cuts.

“Ensuring trees are trimmed 10ft from power lines is the responsibility of property owners,” the company said.

Shelly Leman, managing director of Belco, said: “Trees and foliage falling on power lines are the main cause of power outages during hurricanes and periods of heavy rain.

“Often when a property owner’s trees cause power lines to fault, it affects not only their own property but those of neighbouring properties that are on the same circuit.

“The best way to prevent these outages is to ensure trees are trimmed with a minimum of 10ft of clearance from power lines.

“The video we have produced is a timely reminder that property owners should ensure their trees are trimmed to avoid preventable outages.”

Property owners or their landscaping service planning to trim trees in proximity to power lines are asked to call Belco on 295-5111 or send an e-mail treetrimming@belco.bm at least three weeks in advance to schedule a power disconnection to ensure safety.

A date and duration will be mutually agreed, with no charge to customers for a disconnection.
