Charity reminds public not to drop off thrift store donations

The Salvation Army reminded the public today that it is no longer accepting donations for its thrift store, which has permanently closed.

The charity announced in March that it would be closing at the end of that month following a review of its services and resource allocations.

It has requested that no clothing, furniture or other household items be dropped off at The Salvation Army Thrift Store on King Street or at The Salvation Army regional office as staff are no longer equipped to collect, process or distribute the items.

The Salvation Army will continue to deliver essential community programmes including family services, addiction recovery, life-skills training, transitional housing, emergency shelter and food assistance.

It said that with demand for these services “at an all-time high”, the organisation continues to expand and adapt its support to meet the needs of the Bermuda community.

Dennis Maybury, The Salvation Army’s public relations officer in Bermuda, said earlier: “Making this decision was not easy but it’s part of our responsibility to assess the needs of each community regularly, and to ensure long-term sustainability.”

The charity extended its “heartfelt thanks” to the community for generous support of the thrift store over the years.

The Salvation Army’s activities last year

• Almost 50,000 visits were made to The Salvation Army in Bermuda for assistance

• More than 8,000 visits were for food, Christmas hampers and other essentials

• 2,718 addiction bed days were provided

• 7,442 shelter bed days were provided

• 10,340 contacts were made during street ministry
