Saltus Grammar School held a memorial ceremony yesterday in honour of three Bermudians who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US.

The students paid tribute to past students Boyd Gatton, of the class of 1980, and Robert D Higley II, of the class of 1989.

The school also paid homage to Rhondelle Tankard, a former Warwick Academy student, who also died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001.

The school said: “This day, 24 years ago, marks a profound and sorrowful chapter in history, one that for ever changed the lives of so many around the world.

“We stand together to reflect not only on the lives lost but also on the resilience and strength of the human spirit in the face of such unimaginable adversity.”

A wreath was placed at the base of a memorial palm tree in memory of Mr Gatton and Mr Higley II.

The school said the gesture was a “symbol of Saltus Grammar School's enduring commitment to keeping their memories alive”.

It added: “This commemoration signifies that they will for ever remain part of the Saltus family and that their legacy will continue to be honoured within our community.

“As we remember their lives today, let us also extend our thoughts to all who were affected by the events of September 11th, ensuring that the lessons of unity, courage, and compassion endure in our hearts.”

At yesterday’s event, Captain Sheldon Fox of the Royal Bermuda Regiment played Taps — a musical composition — in memory of the victims of the tragedy.
