‘Solemn day’: 9/11 victims remembered
The US Consulate in Bermuda has paid its respects to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the US.
Antoinette Hurtado, the US Consul-General, led the tributes when she laid flowers at memorial sites at the Consulate on Middle Road in Devonshire and at the Botanical Gardens in Paget.
Ms Hurtado said: “Today is a solemn day for all Americans and for nations around the world who experienced losses, including Bermuda.
“On this 24th anniversary of the horrific September 11, 2001 attacks, we paused to remember the victims, to keep in our hearts the families who were impacted and to honour the first responders and others who risked their lives to help.”
A 9/11 memorial was placed in the Botanical Gardens in September 2007 to honour the almost 3,000 victims of the tragedy.
The structure, which was built at the Bermuda College, includes a piece of steel from the twin towers.
Four separate terror attacks took place on the morning of the attack.
Hijackers used commercial aircraft to strike the World Trade Centre twin towers in New York, and the Pentagon in Washington.
A fourth hijacked passenger plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania before it reached its intended target.
