A Government worker’s act of kindness that went viral over social media won him the Public Service Excellency Award for August.

Qshai Darrell, a worker with the Department of Works and Engineering, carried a senior on his back across tarmac that had just been rolled.

The woman later shared the story in a heartfelt social media post, attracting the attention and commendation of hundreds.

David Burt said: “Mr Darrell’s actions remind us of the compassion and integrity that lie at the heart of public service.”

The Premier added: “His willingness to step in and help a fellow Bermudian in such a meaningful way reflects our core mission as an organisation.”

The incident happened earlier this year as works and engineering crews carried out planned roadworks near the woman’s home.

She was on her way to visit a private residence when the crews told her that vehicle access to the driveway was temporarily restricted and encouraged her to walk to her destination.

However, when Mr Darrell noticed that she did not have on the proper footwear for such a trek, he offered to carry her over the freshly laid tarmac and to her destination.

Cherie Whitter, the head of the Public Service, said: “This is public service at its finest — quietly heroic, deeply human and wholly dedicated to excellence in service delivery.

“Mr Darrell’s example demonstrates what it means to exceed basic service standards and we thank him for reminding us what it truly means to serve with dignity and respect.”
