Canada Post strike suspends mail service to the country
Mail delivery services from Bermuda to Canada have been suspended after Canada Post announced a nationwide strike, the Bermuda Post Office warned today.
It marks the second time in less than a year that Canadian industrial action has hit the island’s mail to the country.
The withholding of services came after the Canadian Government called for an end to door-to-door deliveries within the decade.
In response, the BPO said that, effective immediately, any mail destined for Canada could not be transported or accepted.
A spokesman added: “The Bermuda Post Office will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available.
“Once Canada Post resumes operations, the BPO will promptly advise the public and reinstate regular service to Canada.
“The Bermuda Post Office thanks the public for their understanding and co-operation during this temporary disruption.”
Canada Post described the government plan, one of several changes announced, as an “existential threat” and “an attack” on workers trying to stay relevant during the rise of private couriers.
The strike has returned Bermuda to a similar postal impasse felt in December 2024, when mail to Canada had to be suspended as industrial action by Canadian postal staff continued.
More than 55,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers downed tools on November 15 last year in a dispute over wages and working conditions.
The monthlong strike was lifted shortly before Christmas, with post from the island resuming, after the country’s federal labour relations board ordered its postal staff to return to work.
However, residents were warned to expect some delays as a result of lingering backlogs in Canada’s network.
