PLP Women’s Caucus hosts breast awareness event
Cancer survivors including sitting and former government ministers will talk about their experiences of survival and recovery at a special event being hosted by the Progressive Labour Party Women’s Caucus.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Breakfast is scheduled to take place on Saturday at 10am at West Pembroke Primary School.
Diallo Rabain, the Minister of the Cabinet Office and Digital Innovation, and Wayne Caines, a PLP backbencher, who both battled cancer, will speak on their journeys along with other men and women.
Also speaking at the event are Alaire Godfrey of Ultimate Imaging, Azuree Williams of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, Camily Lovell, a clinical manager and doctoral student, and Dagmara Poprawski, an oncologist consultant at the Bermuda Hospitals Board.
Breakfast will be served and there will also be opportunities to win raffle and door prizes.
Proceeds from the event will be split between BCHC, the PLP Women’s Caucus future outreach programmes and a scholarship which is to be launched in honour of the late PLP “stalwart” Ann Webb.
Cindy Swan, a member of the PLP Women’s Caucus, said: “We have several people who will be speaking about their journey to recovery.
“The honourable Diallo Rabain and the former honourable minister Wayne Caines will speak about their journeys, and we have several ladies as well.
“We kept the ticket prices low because we want to share the educational part of cancer awareness with as many people as possible.
Maxine Esdaille, of the African Diaspora Heritage Trail Foundation, will be among the women featured and is expected to share how, with the help of leading a healthier lifestyle, she became cancer free.
Notably there will also be a gentleman who experienced breast cancer, a disease that more often affects women.
Jasmine Patterson, of Bermuda Broadcasting Company, will moderate the discussion.
Organisers are seeking donations of raffle and door prizes.
The event is open to the public and it is hoped that men and women will attend, particularly those who have experienced cancer.
The PLP Women’s Caucus is working on plans to host a health-related event annually.
Ms Swan, who organised the breakfast with the help of other women’s caucus members, added: “These events are health based because without health there is no quality of life. Health is our wealth.”
