Two escape after home gutted in overnight fire
Two people escaped from their Orchard Grove, Pembroke home early yesterday as fire began to quickly spread.
The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service dispatched 11 firefighters on two trucks shortly before 1am, with concerns that people were trapped inside.
Conditions during the fire forced firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, in to “defensive operations”, the BFRS explained.
The pair were treated at the scene and at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
The BFRS remained on the scene at the partially collapsed house throughout the day yesterday.
Working from multiple sides of the property, firefighters used hose lines and later the service’s water tower to contain the fire and protect a home nearby.
The worst of the blaze was quelled shortly before 4am, but crews remained on site into the morning to extinguish pockets of fire.
Chief Fire Officer Dana Lovell praised their “professionalism and commitment”.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The BFRS urged the public to ensure they have working smoke alarms and an escape plan in place for their household.
