Dog owners urged to pick up after pets at East End
Dog owners have been urged to pick up after their pets when walking their animals around the Olde Towne.
The Corporation of St George’s said in its October newsletter that dog owners should be especially responsible when walking pets along Water Street, Ordnance Island and at King’s Square.
It said: “Dogs are adorable, but their poop is not. In our town, maintaining a pristine appearance is crucial, and people remember cleanliness.
“Regrettably, we must address instances of carelessness.”
“While we love strolling with our canine companions, we do not enjoy having our staff clean up after them or guests being subjected to the smoosh of the odour-carrying clumps that leave a dreadful impression.”
The town said a ban was in place for dogs in its gardens and it hoped to avoid extending the ban to other public walking areas.
Candy-Lee Foggo, town manager, told The Royal Gazette that a dog ban for Somers Garden has been in effect since May 2022.
She explained: “This was necessary as dog owners were not picking up after their dogs.
“Dog owners need to be mindful of other users of public facilities and spaces. It is not only unsightly, it creates a public nuisance.”
Additionally, she said when the corporation’s workers are forced to pick up dog excrement, it is “unhygienic and creates an additional mess for weeding and grass cutting”.
She said some areas of the town are “pedestrianised with cobblestone streets” and as such, the presence of dog faeces does not leave a good impression.
“Please pick up after your dogs” was the key message, Ms Foggo added.
Meanwhile, the corporation said the installation of a mural at Penno’s Cruise ship terminal has been further delayed.
The project, which is being undertaken collaboratively by the town and the Bermuda Tourism Authority, was expected to be completed last month.
Ms Foggo said: “The recent inclement weather has delayed the completion of the project. Once the project is complete there will be an official announcement.
“In the meantime, site works are continuing to ensure an enhanced and beatified area that will attract both visitors and locals for memorable photo opportunities.”
