A man whose body was recovered on Saturday after he went into the ocean last Friday has been identified by police as 62-year-old Carlos Tavares.

Mr Tavares reportedly went overboard at the foot of the cliff near the car park at Ducking Stool Park on North Shore in Pembroke shortly after 5pm. He did not resurface.

An extensive search by police and the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coastguard continued into the evening before having to be called off at nightfall because of increasingly poor sea conditions.

The search resumed at first light the next day, when a passer-by alerted the search party to the body of a male afloat near the site where Mr Tavares had gone missing.

His body was recovered and taken by a Coastguard vessel to Albuoy’s Point, where the death was certified by an on-call doctor.

Police offered condolences to the family and friends of Mr Tavares and said a family liaison officer was assisting them.

An investigation is under way. The Bermuda Police Service appealed for anyone with information to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Andy Beaupierre, on 717-2166 or via e-mail at abeaupierre@bps.bm
