Keeping the steam going at Tynes Bay

The Tynes Bay incinerator in Devonshire generates heat as it burns waste, followed by energy from water turned to steam.

After driving a turbine to get the job done, the steam is cooled back into water — giving the plant a powerful appetite for seawater.

Seawater comes from the North Shore via a substantial pumping station that drivers on North Shore will pass without a second thought.

However, today, the pumps for the waste-to-energy facility required refurbishment.

Work included tuning up the pumping station’s internal equipment that deals with the seawater.

The job required a closure of a substantial section of North Shore Road for an Island Construction crane to assist with moving the equipment.

The closure lasted several hours for the restoration.
