Mother of Ja’Dore says more help needed to find missing girl

The family of a missing teenager expressed frustration yesterday at the lack of resources available to support their search for 15-year-old Ja’Dore Wilson.

Di’Shunta Clarke, Ja’Dore’s mother, urged Andrew Murdoch, the Governor, to call for a search dog to be brought in from Britain to help locate the teenager, who has not been seen in almost a month.

She said: “I should not have to stand up here and beg for more resources. I shouldn’t have to beg for trained personnel to intervene.

“This is not normal for a 15-year-old child to be gone for nearly a month at this point. My daughter does not just leave the home and not communicate and go missing. It’s not typical. It’s not normal.

“I’m not into politics, but I will say that had this occurred maybe a few months ago when it was election time, I think I would have had maybe every politician on the island on my doorstep ready for a photo op.

“I have to hit up the Governor. I have to hit up these politicians and the ministers for help, for aid, to take this matter seriously. It’s ridiculous.”

She said that while the family appreciated the support received, more must still be done, adding: “The people who hold power need to use it.”

A Government House spokeswoman confirmed that Ja’Dore’s family had reached out to speak with the Governor, and a meeting was being scheduled.

Ms Clarke said that there had been a false narrative in the community that Ja’Dore was “willingly missing”.

“The truth is, there is no evidence to suggest that she is willingly missing, that she is safe or even that she is alive at this point,” she said.

“We have had no confirmed sightings, no communication and no way of knowing she is OK. There are no visible belongings missing from our home that would suggest she left on her own or that she intended to leave for this long.

“So the beliefs and opinions that are being published and shared as facts are not only false, but are extremely damaging to bringing her home soon and safe.

“If the community is under the impression that Ja’Dore is simply frolicking about the island not wanting to be found, then that puts people at ease, and when people are at ease they stop looking. It isn’t urgent to them. They stop paying attention.”

The family appealed for resources to bring a dog to the island from Britain to assist with the search, and a GoFundMe page had been launched to raise funds for private investigators, detection dogs and specialised equipment.

In a message to Ja’Dore, Ms Clarke emphasised how much her family missed her.

She added: “I miss just doing jewellery with you and talking about our business ideas and what we will do next.

“I miss just spending weekends with you, when you would wake up and cook breakfast for the family and things of that nature.

“I just want you home. I pray that you are OK. I pray that you are safe. If you are hearing this, I want you to pray every day that you have the courage, if you are out there, to come home, and if you are being harboured that you will be released back to us.

“I want to say that I love you. I love you so much. We all miss you. Just know that we all want you back home where you are safe, where you are loved.”

Detective Inspector Kenten Trott thanked those who have come forward with information.

He said police had received calls and tips, but urged anyone who might know anything about the teenager’s whereabouts to speak up.

Mr Trott said: “She is only 15 years old. She is vulnerable, and just imagine if she was your child or family member.”

He urged the community to join in the search and for property owners to check derelict houses, sheds or open areas.

Mr Trott said: “It may only take you a few moments to do, but please just double check to make sure that she is not there.”

He said the police have been actively involved in the search, stating: “We have been to houses, we have been through neighbourhoods, people have seen us, people have heard us, we have done press conferences, we have done media releases.

“Anything we get, any information we get, any lead we get, we follow up on, so we are reminding the public to continue to assist us as we search for Ja’Dore.

“If you see something, please contact the police immediately. It doesn’t matter the time of day. If you are driving along Middle Road and you see her at a bus stop, call 911 and say you just saw her at this place and this time on this date.

“Please don’t delay it, please don’t wait, please don’t wait to have a conversation in your family group chats. If you see her, call 911 immediately — or if you have any information, contact the police.”

He also urged anyone who might be harbouring Ja’Dore to make sure she is returned home safely.

Mr Trott said: “You might have thought you were helping her. However, it has now been too long. She needs to come home.

“You are harbouring a young lady. She is 15 years old. She is vulnerable. She has to come home.”

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Ja’Dore was urged to contact Mr Trott by calling 717-2345 or e-mailing kenten.trott@bps.bm.

The public may also call 211 or the main police number, 295-0011.
