Bermuda takes the stage at prosecutors’ conference
An “international conversation on justice” was joined by a delegation of Bermudian prosecutors in Singapore, where the island’s Director of Public Prosecutions marked a watershed moment.
Cindy Clarke became the first Bermudian to be elected to the executive committee of the International Association of Prosecutors at the group’s 30th annual conference.
The committee helps to set the strategic direction of the association — the only worldwide body of its kind.
Ms Clarke attended with Adley Duncan, the Acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, and Shaunte Simons-Fox, the Acting Senior Crown Counsel.
They joined more than 450 participants from approximately 90 countries from September 7 to 10, under the theme “The Versatile Prosecutor”, focusing on specialist expertise and the versatility required for prosecutors to address challenges such as new technologies used in crime, as well as legal education and training, mental wellness and resilience, international co-operation, and asset tracing and seizure.
Mr Duncan spoke at the conference’s opening day on the emerging criminal threats presented by artificial intelligence, in a plenary session entitled “Turning the Tables on New Forms of Crime”.
Ms Simons-Fox addressed a special interest session, “The Ethical Tightrope”, using Bermuda as a case study on navigating the moral issues and professional pressures faced by prosecutors.
Ms Clarke led the plenary session on strengthening international co-operation.
She said her election to the executive committee was “both a great honour and a reflection of Bermuda’s strong voice in the global prosecutorial community”.
Ms Clarke added: “Our team’s participation shows that Bermuda has much to contribute to the international conversation on justice, accountability and co-operation.
“With three prosecutors contributing at the highest levels of the conference, Bermuda’s representation at the global level was outstanding.
“Bermuda’s delegation made a powerful impression.”
Andrew Murdoch, the Governor, congratulated the DPP, calling her appointment “a well-deserved recognition of her talent and expertise”.
“Having the DPP recognised in this way also reflects on the high quality of her team of prosecutors, and we should celebrate Bermuda being represented on the global stage,” Mr Murdoch said.
“The island should be rightly proud that Bermuda has a voice in such a forum, contributing their experiences, insights and ideas to help shape global standards in prosecution.”
