Drummer to be honoured at Gombey Festival
A Bermudian who is considered a steward and mentor of drumming will be honoured at the Gombey Festival tomorrow.
Kent Henry, who leads Phoenix Gombeys, a troupe established in 2023, will be celebrated at the commemoration in the Botanical Gardens in Paget from 5pm.
Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Transport, Culture and Sport, said: “Kent Henry represents the heart and spirit of the Gombeys, through discipline, dedication and a deep love for our culture.
“His lifetime of service as a drummer, mentor and leader has strengthened this living tradition and inspired the next generation to carry it forward.”
Mr Henry told the Department of Culture that he believes in guarding the sacred traditions while allowing space for new interpretations, reminding younger drummers that true mastery takes patience, respect and time.
He said: “This culture is a gift and we have to respect it.
“You cannot just show up and expect to be handed everything. You have to earn it.”
As he reflected on his life’s work, Mr Henry said he was proud to have been part of shaping the sound of multiple troupes and teaching countless young men along the way.
“Gombeys is life,” Mr Henry said. “It is a part of the Bermudian culture. It gives us the chance to embrace who we are, to share, to teach and to grow.
“It has carried me through every season of my life and it will always be my way of giving back.”
The Department of Culture urged residents to attend and celebrate Mr Henry’s contributions.
