BHS student named recipient of Butterfield scholarship
A Bermuda High School student has been awarded the Dudley and Deborah Butterfield Scholarship 2025.
Anne-Camille Haziza, 18, was a top scholar in her year at the school and achieved an “exceptional” score of 43 out of 45 in the International Baccalaureate Diploma, placing her in the top 2 per cent to 3 per cent of candidates globally.
Ms Haziza studied mathematics analysis and approaches, chemistry and French at Higher Level, and physics, English and geography at Standard Level.
A spokeswoman for the scholarship said: “Ms Haziza’s scientific interest saw her secure two internships at the Nasa tracking station in Bermuda.
“During the Wallops Academic Research Experience, she supported an Antares rocket launch carrying a Cygnus spacecraft into orbit to deliver supplies to the International Space Station.
“She has been accepted to study applied mathematics with a minor in physics through the Faculty of Science at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
“Ms Haziza has also immersed herself in Bermuda’s marine ecosystems and completed two internships at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and Arizona State University.
“Her work in the US National Science Foundation-funded Plankton Ecology project has been used for graduate-level research, and she will be listed as a coauthor on a related science communication in the near future.”
In recognition of her achievements, Ms Haziza has been also awarded the McGill Excellence Entrance Scholarship — a merit-based award granted to top incoming students.
She plans to connect and collaborate with students, professionals and researchers across disciplines as a member of the McGill Science Undergraduate Society and the McGill Society of Physics.
She participated in the Duke of Edinburgh programme and has volunteered with the cancer care charity Pals.
The McGill Bermuda Scholarship Trust was established in Bermuda in 1989 and offers the Dudley and Deborah Butterfield Scholarship, and the McGill Bermuda Graduates Scholarship in alternate years.
Each awards the selected scholar $6,400 per year for up to four years of study in a degree programme at McGill University.
