Duchess departs after ‘gracious engagement’
Birgitte, the Duchess of Gloucester, experienced a glimpse of Bermuda’s culture from a high-energy performance by Bermuda’s Gombeys before her departure.
The performance by the iconic H&H Gombey Troupe was accompanied by an overview of the cultural significance and history of the Gombeys, a government spokeswoman said.
Last night at LF Wade International Airport, Andrew Murdoch, the Governor, David Burt, the Premier, and Chief Justice Larry Mussenden were among those who officially said farewell to the Duchess.
They also extended the Government and people of Bermuda’s appreciation for her “gracious engagement” throughout her visit, the spokeswoman said.
Her support for the Royal Bermuda Regiment and her genuine interest in Bermuda’s culture, education and environment left a lasting impression, she added.
Mr Murdoch said: “All those who helped organise, support and deliver the packed visit, of which there are many, should be proud of their endeavours and what they achieved.
“It was a wonderful programme of events, and I’m grateful to all those who helped made it happen.”
The Duchess was on the island to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the RBR.
She visited places such as the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art and addressed the RBR since arriving on the island last Thursday.
Before her departure, she attended Government House, where she toured the student garden and met with leaders of the Eco Club, which uses the grounds to grow endemic species to plant across the island.
