The shipment of the new asphalt plant to the island has been delayed by about three months, the Ministry of Public Works and Environment said today.

A government spokesman said that the wait would allow an independent assessment on relocating the Government Quarry.

The existing asphalt plant remains operational, with road paving and maintenance on schedule.

The spokesman explained that owners of the nearby Rosewood Hotel had been interested in the quarry grounds since 2016 for a potential growth of operations.

While the Government declined their offer, it allowed them to fund an independent assessment of the cost and effect of relocating the quarry, although no negotiations or agreement had been made.

The spokesman added: “The Government has made clear that if any future proposal were determined to be in the best interest of Bermudians, the owners would be required to cover the full cost of relocating the quarry’s operations and constructing modern, fit-for-purpose facilities.

“Many of the quarry’s existing buildings are outdated or in poor condition, and addressing them will require significant investment.

“The Government will continue to ensure that all decisions protect the public interest and deliver value for the people of Bermuda.”

The ministry has met with union representatives to discuss the matter.
