Bermuda adopts two official tests to prove fluency in English
Work permit holders whose first language is not English, and who do not hold a degree from an English-instruction university or college, will be required to pass minimum scores on either of two official tests, the immigration department has stated.
The details came in response to queries from employers on the island’s new work permit policy, which came into effect on November 1.
Applicants must pass minimum scores of 60 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or 600 on the Test of English for International Communication, a spokesman said.
The top score for the TOEFL is 120, while that of the TEIC is 990.
Employers are responsible for ensuring proficiency prior to a job commencing. According to the 2025 policy, the exam results must be submitted with the work permit application.
