Government joins campaign to end gender-based violence
Bermuda joined the global community in marking the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
The Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors called on the public to stand up and be counted in the fight against violence.
A ministry spokeswoman acknowledged this year’s theme, “Unite to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls”, as an increasingly relevant topic.
She said: “Digital environments should be places of opportunity, not harm.
“As technology becomes more embedded in daily life, we must ensure that women and girls are protected from violence, whether it occurs online or offline.
“The Government of Bermuda remains committed to supporting survivors, promoting awareness and encouraging responsible digital citizenship.”
The campaign starts on tomorrow on the date recognised worldwide as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It will continue until December 10.
The spokeswoman encouraged the public to recognise instances of digital abuse, which include cyberstalking, online harassment and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images or videos.
She urged online users to report harmful content, promote respectful behaviour and use compassion with victims of harassment.
She added: “By working collectively, we can help eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls, and build a safer, more equitable Bermuda for all.”
