The English Market joins affordable basket programme
The English Market has become the fourth grocer to become an official retail partner with the Ministry of Home Affair’s Affordable Bermuda Basket initiative.
The shop, which has its main location in the Washington Mall, joins the Lindo’s Group, MarketPlace and the Garden Market in the programme intended to help address the cost of living.
All four grocers have committed to offer a 10 per cent reduction on basket items following a 10 per cent reduction received from local wholesalers through the programme, ensuring that the cost savings are passed to consumers.
Alexa Lightbourne, the Minister of Home Affairs, said: “The addition of The English Market expands our affordability network and enables this programme to reach even more residents with practical cost of living support.
“Bermudians have shared with us that grocery costs are unaffordable, and we are encouraged by the increasing number of local partners joining in the commitment to support households with these challenges.
“By offering another accessible location in Hamilton, we’re increasing options for busy working families and city shoppers. Every participating store helps us make everyday essentials more affordable, and that has a direct, positive impact on household budgets across the island.”
The Affordable Bermuda Basket offers reduced prices on key grocery items, including rice, dairy, toiletries and cleaning supplies. As with other retailers, items under the basket at The English Market will be clearly labelled so that shoppers can easily identify them.
A representative of The English Market added: “We’re glad to be part of this collaborative effort to ease the financial pressure on our community.
“As a central grocer in Hamilton, we know how important it is for people to have convenient, affordable choices and we’re committed to doing our part through the basket.”
