Activists recognise everyday needs during Human Rights Day
Bermuda’s champions of equality have recognised today as international Human Rights Day.
Lisa Reed, the executive officer of the Human Rights Commission, acknowledged the occasion, explaining that “human rights begin with each of us”.
She added: “They are shaped by the choices we make, how we treat each other and our shared commitment to a more just and humane world.
“When we act with intention in our daily lives, we help advance human rights.”
Ms Reed added: “Human rights are not distant or abstract — they are part of our daily experience.
“Human rights allow us to take part in our communities, to express who we are and to know that our voices matter.”
This year’s theme is “Our everyday essentials”, which Ms Reed said reflected the “basic things people need every day to live well”.
Ms Reed encouraged the public to recognise the day by reflecting on what was needed to feel safe and included in society, as well as how they could help others receive those same rights and supporting fair laws and policies.
She said: “Human rights come to life when we stand up for one another.
“Each of us has a role to play in making sure everyone’s rights are protected.”
A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors said the 2025 theme reflected how fairness was present in “small, familiar moments we experience each day”.
She said: “Human rights are present in the warmth of a family home, the safety of a classroom, the dignity of work and the comfort of knowing one’s voice matters.”
She added: “Around the world and here in Bermuda, we are reminded that when even one person’s rights are overlooked, the wellbeing of the whole community is diminished.
“So, on this day, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of every individual, regardless of age, background or circumstance.”
The spokesman reminded the public that human rights were not “abstract ideas” but “everyday essentials” for a safe and rewarding life.
She added: “Let us honour them not only with our words, but with the daily acts of kindness, justice and respect that strengthen the fabric of Bermuda.
“Together, we can build a future where everyone, young or old, feels seen, valued and protected.”
