Bermuda births and deaths fall in 2024

By the numbers: the 2024 Annual Report of the Registry General

A report by the Registry General recorded a drop in both births and deaths in Bermuda in 2024, while the number of marriages rose.

Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, told the House of Assembly this morning that the 2024 Annual Report of the Registry General noted a “slight decline” in the number of births and deaths compared with 2023.

MPs heard that 425 children were born in Bermuda over the course of 2024, 11 fewer than in 2023, and that for the second consecutive year there had been no home births.

Mr Hayward said: “Based on information provided by the parents at the time of registration of their children’s birth, the distribution of live births by nationality indicates that 76.7 per cent, or 326 of the total live births, had at least one Bermudian parent.

“In 2024, 99 or 23.3 per cent of the births had parents who are both non-Bermudian.”

Mr Hayward added that 602 Bermuda residents died in 2024, 20 fewer than in 2025, along with 14 non-residents.

The report noted that the average age of death for the period between 2020 and 2024 was 76.2 — 73.1 for men and 79.5 for women.

Meanwhile, Mr Hayward said the report recorded 329 marriages on the island, an increase of 19 from 2023.

He added: “This figure continues the recent trend where the number of marriages between residents, 175, and between residents and non-resident parties, 37, combined to exceed the marriages between non-residents.

“There were 345 marriages performed on board 28 Bermuda-registered ships in 2024. This total represents an increase of 16 from the 2023 total of 329.

“The increase is due to the efforts of the cruise line industry to expand services for weddings on board their ships.

“The cumulative number of marriages, local and maritime, processed through the Registry General for the year ending December 31, 2024 was 674 as compared to 639 for the year ending 2023.”

He added that nine domestic partnerships were recorded in 2024, all of which were formalised at the Registry General Office, an increase from five in 2023.

The report noted that three of the domestic partnerships formalised in 2024 were between male-female couples, two involved male-male couples and the other four involved female-female couples.
