Commissioner of Police: ‘please celebrate responsibly’

The Commissioner of Police today encouraged everyone to have a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Darrin Simons asked the public to think of others while celebrating and to stay off the roads after consuming alcohol.

He said: “We won't tolerate impaired driving on our roads. Alcohol and drugs on the road break families and change lives for ever.”

Roadside sobriety checkpoints, which were erected in all parishes on Monday, will continue until January 5.

Mr Simons said that, if alcohol will be consumed, plan a ride home by reserving a designated driver or taking a taxi.

He also told people to slow down on the roads, as speeding was “a major cause of serious crash and deaths”.

“No party is worth a life,” Mr Simons said. “Give yourself extra time. Be patient. Stay alert for people walking and other cars, especially in busy areas.”

Mr Simons reminded the public to “keep a cool head” during family gatherings, warning that holiday pressure and friction between loved ones often caused domestic abuse cases to spike during the holidays.

He said: “If things start to heat up, please, just walk away. Take a breath and clear your mind.

“Violence is never the answer and my officers will make arrests when it occurs.

“Your family deserves a peaceful Christmas. Don’t let a moment of anger land you in a police cell.”

Police will be out in full force across the island to enforce traffic laws and answer any calls.

Mr Simons encouraged the officers to wish them a merry Christmas as they would be away from their families.

He said: “These steps protect our community. We know you might have concerns about safety right now. The BPS is ready to help you whenever you need us.”

Mr Simons added: “Thank you for helping us. Please celebrate responsibly and look out for each other.

“On behalf of the Bermuda Police Service and my family, I wish you a safe and peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year.”
