Workers at Bermuda’s national incinerator received a helping hand with decorations this year as members of the public donated brand new ornaments.

Tynes Bay staff showed off their handiwork yesterday by taking thrownaway Christmas ornaments and using them to decorate the waste drop-off area on Palmetto Road, Devonshire.

Delbert Hunt, a worker at Tynes Bay, said that while continuing their annual tradition, members of the public went the extra mile and donated new decorations to help give the area a bigger pop.

“It’s really great to see,” Mr Hunt said. “Everybody gets their little Christmas celebration.”

Tynes Bay staff decorated the drop-off last year with recycled lights and ornaments, which proved a massive hit for the general public.

Mr Hunt explained: “The whole objective of this was to change the way people felt about coming to the dump.

“Everybody’s doing their errands and dealing with stress, so we just wanted to bring a little bit of holiday joy and Christmas spirit.”

Mr Hunt said that much like last year, people were excited to come along and see the display — especially children, who would often come at night with their parents to see the display lit up.

He added that the public’s response made him glad because it let him know that he was helping others feel content during the holiday season.

“This is the time where everybody starts feeling the pinch,” he explained. “This just makes people feel a little bit better.”
