Police to increase traffic checks on New Year’s Eve
The officer heading holiday policing today urged the public to continue safety precautions into the new year.
Acting Superintendent Alexander Rollin said a high-profile police presence will remain in place to deter anti-social behaviour across the celebratory events.
He said: “We are well-prepared to respond to and deal with calls for assistance by members of the public to incidents of crime or disorder.”
Mr Rollin said traffic will be policed during New Year’s Eve, with a particular focus on impaired driving, while roadside sobriety checkpoints and licence place checkpoints will be in place and enforced.
Mr Rollin advised the public to book transportation or have a designated driver if they intend to consume alcohol.
He added: “We understand that our stepped-up roads policing activity may create some inconvenience, but this is in the interest of public safety.”
Police visibility will continue into New Year’s Day, particularly in the eastern end of the island as football games take place.
Mr Rollin encouraged the public to attend and support their favourite teams — but to “please do so responsibly”.
He said: “Our intention is to maintain order and provide reassurance to the public while they celebrate the coming new year.
“We would much prefer there is compliance by members of the public rather than our officer having to arrest and charge anyone.
“However, when and where required, we will decisively address any acts of criminality or antisocial behaviour.”
Mr Rollin added: “We wish to take this opportunity to which all residents of Bermuda a happy, healthy, safe, prosperous 2026 and we look forward to continuing to partner with you as we all work to make Bermuda safe.
“Let us embrace the spirit of the new year with kindness, respect and safe passage for all in the community.”
