People young and old can learn more about a Bermudian artist through a new book.

A spokeswoman said almost 100 copies of Charles Zuill: Portals to Another Dimension will be distributed to public schools, educators and care homes thanks to the Bermuda Arts Council and an anonymous donor.

Dr Zuill, a longstanding art critic for The Royal Gazette, helped establish the Bermuda National Gallery in 1992 and taught art and history at Bermuda College for many years.

Charles Zuill: Portals to Another Dimension, published by local company Black Pony Gallery & Publishing, features artwork and essays by Dr Zuill.

Lisa Howie, founding director of Black Pony, said: “Art has the power to connect people across generations.

“By placing these books in schools, libraries and care homes, we hope to encourage dialogue, reflection and enjoyment of one of Bermuda’s talented visual artists who has made a significant impact on the cultural landscape of our island.”

The book will take centre stage during the teacher professional learning day for Bermuda Public School System arts educators next week.

Ms Howie will lead an interactive workshop, “Thinking History Through the Lens of Art”, during the event on Monday.

Shannon Rose, Department of Education officer for the arts, said the workshop, presented in collaboration with the department, National Museum of Bermuda and Black Pony, “will advance cross-curricular ties between literacy, contemporary art and Bermuda history while developing inquiry-based learning tools that teachers can use immediately in their classrooms”.

Visit blackponygallery.com for more information or to purchase the book, which can also be bought at local booksellers.
