Redevelopment works for a housing project at the East End and the purchase of container homes by the Government stand out among agreements disclosed in about $3.7 million of contracts issued over the past year by the Bermuda Housing Corporation.

A total of 13 contracts, all valued at more than $50,000, were included in a public notice released under public access to information rules, published in the Official Gazette on December 31 — closing a year in which tackling the island’s housing shortage featured prominently.

An ongoing contract with Millwood Maintenance & Construction, dated June 17 and to the tune of $1.7 million, covers the conversion of four, three-bedroom units to five mixed-unit configurations at the Chelsea property on Redcoat Lane North in St George’s.

In August, the Government announced that the ageing St George’s building would become apartments in a $2.3 million redevelopment planned for completion this year.

The complex, a grade 3 listed building, dates back to 1874 and has been derelict for about eight years.

Zane DeSilva, Deputy Premier and the Minister of Housing and Municipalities, said the apartments would combine modern comfort with the property’s architectural charm and character.

The notice listed a contract valued $207,730, awarded to Henan Sinova Enterprise Co Ltd in October to cover the first order of seven capsule and four container housing units.

Last year, the Government announced a pilot scheme of “modular and expandable” units as a potential long-term solution to housing needs.

Michael Fahy, the Shadow Minister of Housing and Municipalities, said last month that he was concerned by a lack of detail on their procurement.

The Government said that three vendors were consulted for design and price, with the other vendors being Hengxin Expandable Containers and Jiangxi Qianglin Ltd.

The public notice also listed a $391,320 for a contract dated September 8 to Vision Design & Drafting Services for “interior renovations and alteration” of units at Middle Town Terraces in Pembroke.

A contract valued $296,400 dated June 30,2024 was awarded to Rise & Shine Construction for ground floor renovation works at Garrison View, St George’s.

Another contract, valued at $295,000 and dated June 9, was awarded to JW Gray & Co Ltd for roof installation works at the Gulfstream Rooming House, on Southside Road, St George’s.

Two contracts — at $175,000 and $78,500, issued in November and September respectively — were awarded to Team Six for exterior repairs and painting at two properties in St George’s.

Global Innovations was awarded a contract valued $212,290, dated November 3, for interior renovation works at Langley Rooming House on Tommy Fox Road in St George’s.
