Salute to coastguard leader in excellence award
An officer of the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coastguard led the service to “operational excellence” over the past six months, making him the December recipient of the Public Service Excellence Award.
Acting Major Jeffrey Patterson was at the helm during 98 search-and-rescue missions.
The section also supported law enforcement and regulatory operations across the island, delivering 24/7 maritime coverage.
Acting Major Patterson secured international grant funding to establish the regiment’s first unmanned systems unit and procure an underwater remotely operated vehicle.
The drone unit, staffed by FAA-certified operators from across the regiment, is equipped with infrared technology to enhance shoreline searches and emergency response.
The underwater vehicle will enable critical search-and-recovery operations below the waves, including work in hazardous environments such as ship hull inspections and deep water recovery.
Acting Major Patterson was credited with building national capacity by teaching maritime navigation and skills at Bermuda College, helping hundreds of residents qualify for professional certification.
David Burt, the Premier, congratulated him, adding: “The coastguard was a major initiative of this Government, transforming the regiment from a primarily-land based operation into a strong and capable maritime unit.
“Acting Major Patterson is being recognised for implementing technology that strengthens Bermuda’s ability to intercept illegal contraband before it reaches our shores.”
Cherie Whitter, the head of the public service, called Acting Major Patterson “a long-serving, committed public officer who goes above and beyond in pursuit of excellence”.
She added: “His contributions in leading the development of the coastguard, innovating and building capacity, is impressive.”
Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, commended Acting Major Patterson’s “outstanding contribution to Bermuda’s maritime safety and security”.
He added: “His leadership has enhanced the coastguard’s operational capability, strengthened search-and-rescue response and improved support to partner agencies.
“These advancements help ensure safer waters for all who live, work and travel in and around Bermuda.”
