Just 114 Belco customers were without power this morning as the clean-up from the weekend’s storm continued.

The utility said Belco crews had restored power to more than 1,500 customers since yesterday afternoon. Fifty five of those still without power are in Pembroke, while 19 were still in the dark both in Sandys and St George’s.

The ferry service and some flights were cancelled yesterday as high winds blasted the island.

As gale-force winds hammered the island, Shelly Leman, the managing director of Belco, said crews will continue to operate as long as conditions remain safe, even as further periods of higher winds were expected later this afternoon.

Residents were asked to ensure that any debris that could become airborne is secured safely at their homes or properties.

Ms Leman said that last night Belco crews removed a trampoline that had become airborne and entangled in a section of overhead wires near Dolly’s Bay in St David’s.

She added: “I would like to thank our crews who were out working late last (Saturday) night until 2am under extremely challenging conditions.

“Our crews will continue working today until all customers have had their power restored. I urge everyone to stay safe, and thank you for your patience as we work to restore power.”

“The gale-force winds associated with the low-pressure system have caused impacts to overhead power lines and infrastructure across the island, with significant vegetation blown into power lines contributing to the large number of outages,” Ms Leman said earlier today.

At 2.40pm, about 1,831 customers were without power, with the largest areas affected being Smith’s, Warwick and Sandys.

Belco said a burnt pole caused outages at Sandys.

At 1.44pm, a spokeswoman for Marine and Ports Services said the weather conditions forced the cancellation of all ferry services across the island. She said the advisory is valid only for today.

In the latest forecast update, the Bermuda Weather Service said gale-force winds are expected to continue to impact the island into this evening.

It said a complex triple-centred low weather system continued to deepen to the west through to the north of the island.

The BWS said: “Southwesterly gale-force winds will occasionally gust storm-force while driving in rounds of blustery showers.

“Near-west winds ease slightly by Monday, but still remain strong and gusty as blustery showers persist into midweek while a series of weaker fronts and troughs pass to our north.”

As bad weather conditions persisted today, multiple flights were cancelled to and from the island, according to Skyport’s website.

BermudAir flights from Toronto, Orlando, New York, Boston, Montreal and departing flights were cancelled “due to deteriorating weather conditions in Bermuda”, the airline said on its website.

“At BermudAir, your safety is our priority,” the airline said.

Arrival and departure flights operated by American Airlines, Delta and United were also cancelled, according to the Skyport website.

Meanwhile, Belco reported that its emergency number, 955, was back in operation.

Earlier the company said the number was temporarily out of service and its IT team was working with its telecoms partners to resolve the issue.

A total of 2,298 customers were without power as of 10pm on Saturday, with the bulk in Hamilton Parish, where 1,428 had lost electricity, and Southampton, where another 610 homes were in the dark.

Another 206 lost power in Warwick, while Paget and Devonshire had 30 and 13 outages respectively.
