Hamilton Princess reveals Black History Month honourees
Prominent figures from the judiciary, media and insurance sectors will be honoured by the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club as part of Black History Month.
Retired Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons, the first Bermudian-born Black woman to serve as a Supreme Court judge, Glenn Jones, an NBC Boston Evening News anchor, and Sophia Greaves, an insurance and reinsurance legal practitioner, were selected for their contributions to the island.
They will be honoured at a celebratory cocktail reception and dinner at the hotel’s Harbourview Ballroom on February 27.
Tim Morrison, the general manager of the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, said: “This celebration is a valued annual tradition for the hotel, bringing together returning attendees and new guests alike to acknowledge the remarkable contributions of these individuals.
“The evening highlights not only their personal and professional journeys, but also the importance of recognising members of our community during their lifetimes.”
At the event, presenters will share brief reflections on the honourees’ lives and achievements.
The hotel said a specially curated four-course menu has been created in collaboration with the trio and Richard Zuill, the hotel’s Bermudian sous chef.
During her career, Mrs Justice Simmons chaired the Legal Aid Committee and the Round Table on Domestic Violence, represented the island on the Caribbean Association of Judicial Officers and contributed to anti-money laundering efforts through the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force.
She presided over significant cases, most notably a 2017 ruling on same-sex marriage in Bermuda.
She retired from the Supreme Court in 2022 and briefly sat as a Justice of Appeal.
Mrs Justice Simmons works as a consultant at Chancery Legal Ltd, specialising in private client work.
Mr Jones is an Emmy Award-winning journalist who works at NBC Boston with more than a decade of experience as a field reporter and anchor.
He covered news in the competitive Boston media market in the mid-2000s as well as over the past four years.
Mr Jones served as press secretary to the Premier for about three years from 2007, when he led crisis communications and media relations for the country’s highest elected office.
In 2020, he was appointed interim chief executive and chief experience officer for the Bermuda Tourism Authority.
Ms Greaves serves as a director in the corporate department and head of the insurance and reinsurance practice at Conyers Dill & Pearman.
She was the first Black female to be appointed to the roles at the firm.
Her practice spans all aspects of insurance transactional and regulatory matters, and her client base is diverse, ranging from start-ups to large multinational insurance groups with Bermuda operations.
She also serves as chairwoman of the scholarship committee at Conyers Dill & Pearman and is involved in the firm’s recruitment initiatives.
Ms Greaves also serves on numerous Bermuda company boards and is the recording secretary for the Lady Cubitt Compassionate Association.
