Reinsurance leader joins board of homeless charity
A charity offering housing and support to the island’s unsheltered population has appointed Tracey Gibbons to its board of directors.
Home welcomed her “depth of experience, strategic insight and commitment to equity”.
Ms Gibbons has more than 40 years’ experience in insurance, reinsurance and captive management and is global head of strategic development at QBE Re.
Arthur Wightman, the charity’s chairman, called Ms Gibbons a “proven leader”.
Before joining QBE Re in 2021, Ms Gibbons was a senior vice-president at Third Point Re, now SiriusPoint. She spent 16 years at Allied World Re.
She serves on the diversity, equity and inclusion committee for the Association of Bermuda International Companies Diversity and is an interviewer for its education awards.
She also served on the board of Women In Reinsurance.
Mr Wightman said: “Tracey has worked to level the playing field for women and under represented groups in the insurance industry.
“Her passion for social justice aligns with Home’s mission to end homelessness. Tracey has already made a big difference for Home over the last few years, generously volunteering her time, expertise and resources to support our clients and broader mission.”
Home was founded in 2021 to help end homelessness and takes a collaborative approach with the Government and multiple helping agencies.
Home’s Housing First programme provides stable accommodation and tailored support to help return clients to independent living.
It runs a Renting Ready programme focused on tenants’ rights, responsibilities and financial management to help prevent evictions.
By the end of 2024, the charity had identified 1,101 people experiencing homelessness in Bermuda.
Ms Gibbons said: “Home is an exceptional charity delivering impact though its unwavering commitment to compassion, integrity and strong governance.
“Coming from a non-privileged background and having built a career as a woman in a male-dominated industry, I understand what it means to feel like an outsider.
“Those early experiences shaped my enduring belief in equity, belonging and the fundamental right of every individual to live with dignity.
“Seeing how Home brings these values to life, standing alongside people who have found themselves on the margins of society, often through no fault of their own, is both powerful and inspiring.
“The organisation’s work does not simply provide support; it restores hope, agency and humanity. I am deeply honoured to support Home and its mission, which strengthens not only the lives of those it serves, but the wellbeing and fabric of our entire community.”
Denise Carey, the chief executive and executive director of Home, added: “We are proud to welcome Tracey to Home’s board. Her depth of experience, strategic insight and commitment to equity will strengthen our ability to drive lasting change.
“As we continue to build a co-ordinated, data-led response to homelessness in Bermuda, Tracey’s leadership will help ensure Home remains focused on practical solutions that deliver dignity, stability and opportunity for the people we serve.”
