Police intervene after child is found with a fake handgun
Police officers were praised for their professionalism after a report of a boy carrying a gun.
The BPS were alerted about a child near Prospect Primary School with what looked like a black handgun at about 2.30pm yesterday.
Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene and were handed a photograph of the child holding what looked like a firearm.
Police eventually found the child near the school. They talked to him and he led them to a nearby residence, where an adult handed them the alleged weapon.
Officers examined the handgun and concluded that it was a replica firearm painted black.
Antoine Daniels, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, praised the officers for their skill and calm in the uncertain situation.
He said: “These officers employed methods taught during their training to ensure that at no time was the child’s safety or wellbeing put at risk.
“This is due in no small measure to the rigorous methods used in preparing our firearms teams for dealing with high-pressure situations.
“I wish to also thank those who contacted us and assisted in having this situation resolved.”
The assistant commissioner urged parents and caregivers to “pay close attention to the items your young ones take with them when they leave home”.
He added: “While the outcome of this matter was positive, it did initially create a level of panic which could have been prevented.”
