A government worker who took the lead in helping young people secure employment was recognised with the Public Service Excellence Award for January.

Tarik Bean-Darrell, career development officer at the Department of Workforce Development, delivered “standout leadership” to advance the Government’s Youth Employment Strategy, a spokeswoman said.

While much of the office was on leave, Mr Bean-Darrell supported the director in evaluating new client assessment tools and helped to formulate improved assessment strategies — allowing the department to continue key service improvements without interruption.

He has also supported colleagues through his commitment to professional development, assisting team members in achieving their Global Career Development Facilitator Certification.

Mr Bean-Darrell’s leadership of the Bridge to Work Programme had him working closely with young people as his core clients.

Eight of 14 participants secured programme extensions, full-time employment or continued traineeships under his guidance.

Mr Bean-Darrell also works with vulnerable youth via the Gang Violence Reduction Team. He has helped young Bermudians obtain training in maritime work and skilled trades, helping to redirect lives.

Zane DeSilva, the Acting Premier, congratulated Mr Bean-Darrell. “His leadership has enhanced the lives of the people of Bermuda by expanding opportunities for our young people,” he added.
