Museum to host action-packed day of fun and entertainment
Cannon fire, yoga classes and bike demonstrations are just some of the features to look forward to at the National Museum of Bermuda’s Community Day on Sunday.
The annual family-friendly event will include food vendors, door prizes and a wide range of hands-on activities designed to encourage engagement with Bermuda’s history and culture.
Community Day is a signature event within the museum’s Free for February offer, allowing all Bermuda residents free admission to the museum throughout the month.
Elena Strong, the museum’s executive director, said: “At the National Museum of Bermuda, we strive to be an essential community education resource, one that sparks curiosity, inspires discovery and encourages people of all ages to explore Bermuda’s history and heritage.
“We hope everyone will take advantage of the free, fun-filled Community Day, made possible through the generous support of our sponsors, vendors and community partners.”
Ms Strong thanked RenaissanceRe and Butterfield Group for their continued support.
Activities will run from 10am to 3pm, and the museum will remain free for all visitors, residents and tourists, from 10am to 5pm.
The day will begin with a yoga class led by Lisa Wingood, followed by art activities with artists and educators Jake Commandeur and Shanna Hollis, and corn husk doll making with Janet DeBraga.
Visitors can also enjoy artist talks by Graham Foster, the creator of Hall of History, Larry Mills on local masonry techniques and John Gardner on his Stone: From Bermuda to Charleston exhibit.
There will be performances by the St David’s Islanders and Native Community as well as Gombey dancers.
New additions this year include participation from the Bermuda Classic Bike Club which will showcase a collection of classic bikes, a performance by the Royal Bermuda Regiment Band and Corps of Drums, and a photography workshop led by local artist Aderonke Wilson, inspired by the museum’s Grundy Youth Photography Competition.
There will also be a special story session led by Marla Smith of The National Youth Library.
Honouring Bermuda’s maritime heritage, the team from Endeavour will host a knot-tying activity connected to the museum’s historic collections.
Additional highlights include cannon firings at noon and two demonstrations by Dolphin Quest.
Butterfield & Vallis will provide free water while supplies last and FourWays Restaurant & Inn will offer complimentary beef and vegetarian chilli in the Commissioner’s House.
Dockyard Brewing will serve samples of its locally crafted beers and provide complimentary coffee while supplies last.
