A fibre break in Devonshire caused Digicel customers throughout Bermuda to lose mobile service for about three hours yesterday.

Brittany Repose, the head of business-to-consumer at Digicel Bermuda, said the fibre break happened in the Prospect area at about noon and crews were working at the site to resolve the issue.

Digicel reported earlier on social media that the breakage may cause “disruption to voice, messaging and mobile data services”.

The company added: “We understand how important reliable connectivity is for daily life and business, and we regret the inconvenience this may cause.

“Our network engineering teams are actively working to complete repairs and restore full service as quickly as possible.”

A fibre break is when a fibre optic cable is damaged or broken.

Police said that the outage caused some calls to not go through to the main police number, 295-0011.

An updated post on Digicel’s Facebook stated that service was fully restored by 3.15pm.

It said: “We know how disruptive even a short service interruption can be — whether for staying in touch with family, running a business or managing daily responsibilities.

“We are truly sorry for the inconvenience this caused.”

UPDATE: this article has been updated with information that mobile service has been fully restored
