City seeks feedback on Christmas Boat Parade
Members of the local boating community were invited to provide feedback on the City of Hamilton’s Christmas Boat Parade to strengthen participation in the holiday event.
The City said the survey is geared to better understand “what encourages, or discourages, participation in the parade” following a gradual decline in the number of registered boats in recent years.
It said it is seeking input directly from the public to identify practical barriers to entry and explore ways to make participation more accessible, rewarding and enjoyable.
The parade this year is planned for December 12 and the City said that at the last edition of the event in 2024, it was forced to extend the registration period for the event following a call for additional boats.
It said the move highlighted the need for a closer look at how the event can better support participants.
The City said feedback from the survey will inform potential enhancements to the 2026 edition, including the possibility of additional sponsorships to support lighting, decor, fuel costs, prizes or new award categories.
Lorna Hayward, a senior events co-ordinator for the City, added: “We want to ensure the Christmas Boat Parade remains just as enjoyable for the boaters as it is for those watching from shore.
“This survey gives mariners an opportunity to tell us what would make participation easier, whether that relates to costs, time commitments, decoration requirements, prize categories or other considerations.”
As planning gets under way, the City encouraged boat owners, local businesses, workplaces, church groups and community organisations to consider collaborative entries.
It also welcomed interest from organisations or corporations who may wish to partner through sponsorship or support.
The survey is available through the City of Hamilton website until March 31.
