Final Triple Challenge planned for this week
Participants can conquer unique obstacle courses for charity for the last time this week, with the eleventh and final Bermuda Triple Challenge set for Friday to Sunday.
The event has raised $550,000 for local charities since its inception and Raleigh Bermuda, the Bermuda Zoological Society, Tomorrow’s Voices, Knowledge Quest and the Bermuda Foundation of Insurance Studies will receive funds this year.
Jason Correia, co-race director, said the organising team, many of whom have been involved since the beginning, is stepping down and a replacement committee has not been found. It also had fewer local entries and less interest from participants to fundraise.
He said the best part of organising the race has been the fundraising and meeting competitors from around the world, some who claim it as their “favourite obstacle course race and race-cation”.
This year has drawn 33 international participants, who can expect the usual obstacles such as climbing over a public bus, completing the Royal Bermuda Regiment’s assault course and a 300ft water slide.
Mr Correia said: “Each year offers new challenges, whether canvassing for sponsors or troubleshooting any unforeseen issues along the way.
“The biggest undertaking, however, is the sheer scope of what needs to be accomplished over the entire weekend to pull off the Bermuda Triangle Challenge.
“Within a small set-up team of five, each day’s racecourse and obstacles need to be erected, broken down, packed into a container, moved to the next venue and run all over again.”
The fun begins with at 7pm on Friday, with the CG Urban Foot Race in St George, followed by the Butterfield & Vallis Island Challenge on Saturday at 8.40am at Warwick Camp.
The Chubb Royal Challenge starts at Lagoon Park at 9.45am on Sunday and an appreciation brunch is the weekend’s final event.
Aideen Ratteray Pryse launched the Island Challenge in conjunction with the Royal Bermuda Regiment in March 2012.
Jason Correia and Reid Robinson worked with Mr Pryse to expand the obstacles involved and organise two other charity races throughout the year.
The Bermuda Triple Challenge, launched in 2014, incorporated all three into a single weekend.
Clare Penchaud, another race director, said one point was earned for every dollar raised, so individuals and teams of up to five people that raise more money had a better chance of winning.
She added: “Each $500 increment of charitable funds raised earns teams up to three obstacle wild cards which participants can use to ‘skip’ any non-mandatory obstacle during the weekend, saving precious time on course.”
Registration individuals and teams range from $90 to $225. Participation in the charity team’s fun division costs between $70 and $175.
A statement said: “The team is extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished and are extremely grateful for all the volunteers and corporate sponsors since 2012, including this year’s sponsors, CG, Butterfield & Vallis, Take Five Catering and Chubb.”
