Salute to dedication of child and family services worker
A worker at the Department of Child and Family Services who showed “exceptional professionalism, collaboration and child‑centred practice” is the latest recipient of a public service excellence award.
Christopher Cunningham, of the residential treatment services section, was nominated for the February honour after stepping forward during a recent high‑risk case involving a parent experiencing significant mental health challenges.
Mr Cunningham went outside his usual remit and called on his past mental health expertise to support a colleague in the matter.
A spokeswoman said he offered invaluable “calm, informed guidance that contributed significantly” in a joint home visit.
She added: “He ensured that concerns were identified clearly and sensitively using a trauma‑informed lens, strengthening both the assessment and the resulting safety plan for the children.”
David Burt, the Premier, said: “Mr Cunningham’s actions reflect the standard of service that the people of Bermuda deserve.
“His ability to apply clinical insight to practical, child‑focused decision making helped ensure that the children’s safety and wellbeing remained at the forefront.”
Mr Burt said the willingness to step beyond formal role boundaries exemplified collaboration in the public service.
Cherie Whitter, the Head of the Public Service, added: “It is always rewarding to observe public officers draw upon the breadth of experience and diverse insights gained throughout the service which allows them to act in the best interests of the public we serve.
“I take this opportunity to extend sincere thanks to Mr Cunningham for demonstrating excellence in public service.”
The Government said that the nomination highlighted not only technical skill but Mr Cunningham’s “commitment to safeguarding, his steady presence in challenging situations and his dedication to supporting both colleagues and families”.
It added: “His efforts made a meaningful difference to the public officer involved, the investigation process and the overall safety of the children.”
