King Charles III could tie Bermuda visit to US trip
The King may visit the island next month as part of a trip to the United States, it was reported by British media today.
King Charles III’s trip is expected to include a stop in Washington, where a packed schedule of engagements would feature an address to the US Congress and an evening banquet.
The US is this year marking the 250th anniversary of its declaration of independence from Britain.
It was reported in The Times that the King — who will be accompanied by the Queen — will spend a day in New York and make a third stop at a rural location.
The publication added: “The monarch is expected to make a fourth stop at a country with ties to Britain, possibly Bermuda.”
A spokeswoman at Buckingham Palace told The Royal Gazette today: “We haven’t confirmed anything. There has been no official confirmation on any overseas travel.”
Government House added that “any details of His Majesty’s overseas travel will be announced by Buckingham Palace in the usual way”.
The Royal visit to Washington comes at a time when the US is engaged in tense relations with its allies amid the escalating Iran War.
The Times report said that President Donald Trump will seek to impress the King and Queen with a display of US military might.
It added that the visit is expected to draw inspiration from the US trip taken by Queen Elizabeth II in 1976 to celebrate the country’s bicentennial, although the King’s tour would be much shorter than his mother’s six-day trip.
The late Queen also visited Bermuda on that occasion, stopping in Hamilton on the Royal Yacht Britannia.
