Belco announces winners of annual kite safety contest

Awareness about the dangers of flying kites near power lines came into focus when Belco announced the winners of its annual kite safety poster competition.

The contest was open to Primary 1 and 2 pupils and the company said that more than 60 posters were submitted.

Belco noted that kite safety remains a top priority on the island, particularly during the Easter season when traditional kite flying peaks.

Its annual contest is held to raise awareness about the dangers of flying kites near power lines, which can cause outages and pose serious safety risks to the public.

Best overall poster: Luke Rossides, a P2 pupil at Saltus Cavendish who received a $200 toy voucher and a $200 Belco gift card

Best kite safety message: Shiloh Trott, a P1 pupil at Northlands Primary who received a $100 toy voucher and a $100 Belco gift card

Most beautiful poster: Ryla Thompson-Dill, a P1 pupil at Northlands Primary who won a $100 toy voucher and a $100 Belco gift card

Most original: Reyna Robinson, a P2 pupil at Saltus Cavendish who won a $100 toy voucher and a $100 Belco gift card

Best use of mixed media: Skylar DaSilva, a P1 pupil at Warwick Academy who received a $100 toy voucher and a $100 Belco gift card

Transmission, Distribution and Retail Choice: Ahsai Cox, a P1 pupil at Northlands Primary who received a $100 toy voucher and a $100 Belco gift card

Honourable mentions: Josie Ellingson, a P2 pupil at the Bermuda High School, and Yannis Deshields, a P1 pupil at Purvis Parish School. They each received a $50 toy voucher and $50 Belco gift card

Krista Barnes, Belco’s director of communications and corporate strategy, said: “We were thrilled to receive many beautiful posters from Bermuda’s primary school students, and it was difficult to decide on the winners.

“This competition is important to help children understand the importance of flying kites safely while also showcasing their creativity.

“Congratulations to the winners. All our staff and customers look forward to seeing the colourful posters displayed in our lobby and on Belco’s social media platforms.”
