Bermuda Sea Cadets celebrate growth during 60th anniversary

A maritime uniformed group celebrated it 60th anniversary with a prize-giving ceremony and recognition of supporters.

The Bermuda Sea Cadet Corps celebrated personal achievements and the hard work of their ranks, volunteers and families.

Lieutenant-Colonel Duncan Simons, the Commanding Officer of the Royal Bermuda Regiment and the evening’s guest of honour, said he was “impressed and inspired” by the level of accomplishment on display.

He said: “Youth organisations like the Sea Cadets are really important in that they strengthen civil society and foster a sense of duty to serve one’s community.

“It was a privilege to speak to them and join in celebrating their accomplishments over the past year.”

Cadets were promoted as part of a yearlong training programme and earned qualifications in skills such as drilling, seamanship, catering, piping and rowing.

Sea Cadet recognitions

The following cadets were honoured for their accomplishments:

• TS Admiral Somers Leadership Award: Able Cadet Xavier Vezina

• Commanding Officer’s Award for Outstanding Commitment: Ordinary Cadet Christian Fox

• Commendations for Self-Discipline and Commitment: Ordinary Cadet Samuel Valles, Ordinary Cadet A’Lia German-Pitcher, Cadet 1st Class Kayden Harvey

• Commendation for Respect and Loyalty: Ordinary Cadet Sophie Tindall

• Commendation for Courage and Commitment: Cadet 1st Class Aidan Taylor

• Commendations for Sea Cadet Core Values: Cadet Briyani Gibbons and Cadet 1st Class Soraiya Trott

• Merit Point Achievement — Attendance: Ordinary Cadet Samuel Valles

• Merit Point Achievement — Uniform: Ordinary Cadet Cyana Simons-Cyris

• Merit Point Achievement — Discipline: Ordinary Cadet Lexie Taylor

• Merit Point Achievement — Participation: Ordinary Cadet Lexie Taylor

The BSCC had an active previous year, having taken part in annual parades for events including the King’s Birthday and Remembrance Day, as well as for commemorations for the HMS Jervis Bay, Midshipman Dale and pilot James “Jemmy” Darrell.

Cadets also took part in community events such as the unit’s annual sponsored row, a “trashathon”, a fish fry and a family bingo night.

The corps had the largest ship’s company this year for the first time in more than three decades, with 32 Sea Cadets and Junior Cadets from 14 schools across Bermuda and an even split of girls and boys.

Colonel Simons thanked the volunteers and their families, the unit management committee and the association executive for their hard work.

Lieutenant Commander Michael Frith, the Commander of the Bermuda Sea Cadet Corps, called the cohort a “wonderfully diverse, committed and enthusiastic group of young people”.

He added: “They show up every week, take on every challenge and represent Bermuda with pride.”
