Male role models celebrated in Father’s Day giveaway

Prints giveaway: Staphen Dill, left, wanted to highlight the importance of positive male role models this Father's Day (Photograph supplied)

After having a discussion with his daughter about Father’s Day, one Southampton dad decided to host a special giveaway to highlight the importance of recognising positive male figures.

Keen photographer Staphen Dill posted on Facebook asking people to explain why their father, son, grandfather, uncle or another positive male figure was deserving of one of his special photographs printed on glass.

He was overwhelmed with the response.

Mr Dill said: “My eldest daughter and I were sitting and talking about Father’s Day and I had just made an order of prints from abroad.

“Jokingly, my daughter said that for Mother’s Day mums get loads of gifts, while fathers get a bowl of ice cream.

“I said — here’s what were going to do. We’re going to give away a photo. We will get everyone to write why they think of their father, uncle or male role model deserves one of the prints.”

Mr Dill, a service delivery technician for Digicel, went through all of the entries with his daughters Aren, 8, and Justice, 3, before selecting the winners and presenting them with their prizes on Sunday.

He added: “Some of the entries were heavy to read. We [fathers] don’t get as much recognition as mothers do, even though we do our part.

“For me, it was nice to see that there are male figures who are being written about in a positive light.”

The top print displays a reef on the South Shore, near Chaplin Bay, Mr Dill said: “The idea is that the motion of the water represents life, and the reef is the solitude of a person, in this case a father. It’s a sentiment that I hold close to.

“The second photo is from the point of view of East Broadway Roundabout.” He said it called to mind “the different paths that we have to cross in life”.

Asked if he had thoughts of doing a similar thing in the future, Mr Dill said that he hoped to do another giveaway later in the year.

He added: “I plan on doing one around Christmastime and that one I probably will make for any person in anyone’s life.”
