The Ministry of Finance has issued a job listing searching for a Bermudian to become the designate financial secretary.

A notice published in The Royal Gazette, said that the successful candidate would “help shape the future of Bermuda’s economy”, working under the supervision of the Financial Secretary as part of a three-year succession planning training programme.

During that period, the designate financial secretary would assist the substantive postholder in the strategic financial management of Bermuda’s Public Service and the broader economy.

The notice said: “Over the years Bermuda has built a reputation as an international financial centre that enables sound innovative financial practices while ensuring that firms operate under a regulatory and supervisory framework that is in line with international standards and keeps pace with market developments.

“The current dynamic period of global change presents exciting opportunities for growth and innovation for the country and the Government.

“The designate financial secretary will be actively involved in developments, working alongside private sector, international, multilateral and public sector partners to further enhance Bermuda’s global position and the Government’s financial strength.”

Applicants must have a master’s degree in business administration, finance, economics, statistics, financial planning, financial services or a related discipline, and have at least seven years’ experience in a senior financial management position with “proven ability in setting strategic direction, financial planning, leadership and management”.

The closing date for applicants was listed as July 29.

Chidozie Ofoego was named as Financial Secretary in April 2024, tasked with overseeing the finance ministry’s headquarters, the Accountant-General’s department, the Department of Social Insurance, the Office of the Tax Commissioner, customs tariff and duty collection, and the Registrar of Companies.

Mr Ofoego’s appointment ended a three-year vacancy that came after the death of Anthony Manders in January 2021.

Cheryl-Ann Lister served in an acting capacity during the intervening period, but it was announced in February 2024 that she would be retiring.
