Residents have been urged to reflect on the role they play in creating respectful, safe and peaceful communities.

It comes as International Day of Peace is observed globally tomorrow.

The Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors said the day presents an opportunity for the promotion of peace and nonviolence and to consider how our everyday choices can contribute to stronger relationships and communities.

It encouraged residents to mark the occasion by considering the choices they can make each day to promote greater understanding, dignity and peaceful resolution.

“By doing these things, we can each contribute to a more peaceful and respectful Bermuda,” a government spokeswoman said.

The ministry said it recognised that building peaceful communities is a continuing responsibility shared across generations.

It said young people, families, seniors and communities have an important role to play in fostering understanding, respect and positive relationships.

A spokeswoman said peace begins with the choices made at home, work, online and in neighbourhoods.

She said it required respect for others, accountability for actions and a commitment to resolving disagreements without harm.

“Small actions can make a meaningful difference … choosing our words carefully, listening before responding, treating others with dignity and seeking peaceful solutions when disagreements arise,” she added.

It was noted that the day provided an opportunity for reflection on how one responds to differences within the home, workplace, school and the community.

The ministry said creating a culture of respect requires everyone to consider how their words and actions affect others.
