Sandys Boat Club advance to ICS Cup Final in thriller

Sandys Boat Club needed a tie-breaker to beat Warwick Workmen’s Club II and clinch their place in the Island Construction Services Cup final.

Sandys took the lead in the semi-final, which was hosted by Warwick, after captain Martin Siese defeated Ray DeSilva 45-39 in the opening frame, but Warwick came storming back to level the match after captain Steven Bremar took down Sandys’ Richie Beale 69-40 in the second frame.

Warwick then surged ahead 2-1 after Scott Barnes demolished former Bermuda Olympic sailor Peter Bromby 56-11, with Barnes seizing early control after making a break of 43 to leave Bromby requiring snookers.

Paul Fedden then led the Sandys fightback by taking down Progressive Labour Party MP Zane DeSilva 56-29 to send the match to a decider.

DeSilva and Bromby were drawn to play with the latter winning 52-28 to secure Sandys place in the final, where they await the winner of the remaining semi-final between Spanish Point Boat Club I and Royal Artillery Association.

Snooker League action also continued last week with Royal Artillery Association, Spanish Point Boat Club II and Sandys Boat Club all prevailing in their respective matches.

Hosts RAA edged Warwick Workmen’s Club I 3-2, with the home team jumping to a 2-0 lead after captain Jacal Washington won both singles frames against Pamela Quadroy, 54-14 and 68-56 respectively.

Newcomer and former Warwick and Southampton Rangers footballer Steve Tucker pulled one back for the visitors after getting past RAA's Kyle Williams 54-25, but Jelani Hollis restored RAA’s two-frame advantage after defeating Warwick captain Damon Hanley 72-35.

Tucker and Gary Bascombe won the doubles match over RAA's Williams and Hollis 58-27 to salvage some pride for Warwick.

Elsewhere, hosts Spanish Point Boat Club II beat Watford Sports Club in another tight 3-2 match.

Billy Wotton got the home side off to a flying start after sweeping both single frames against Watford's Kidd Mouchette 46-36 and 54-23.

Captain John Orr then beat reigning DeSilva Cup champion Keino Zuill in the next frame 60-29 to give the hosts an unassailable 3-0 lead.

Watford captain Aaron Bean defeated Tyler Moniz 64-54 on the final black in the next frame to pull one back before Watford's Winslow Smith and Bean then secured a valuable second point after beating Orr and Moniz 73-28 in the doubles.

Sandys Boat Club enjoyed a convincing 4-1 win over Spanish Point Boat Club I.

Paul Fedden opened the scoring for Sandys, taking the first of two frames against Spanish Point captain Stewart Greenslade 67-55; the latter going in off the final black to effectively hand the frame to his rival, with Fedden taking the next frame 52-19.

Todd Dziak defeated Peter Bromby 35-23 to pull one back for the visitors in the next frame, but Richie Beale restored Sandys’ two-frame advantage after beating Chris Dakin 55-34.

Experienced sailors Martin Siese and Bromby then overpowered Dziak and Alan Smith in the doubles contest 73-45 to complete the victory for the home team.
