Richard Burton beats Zane DeSilva in Memorial Cup

Richard Burton secured his spot in the second round of the Tony DeSilva Memorial Cup with a 2-0 win over Zane DeSilva at Warwick Workmen’s Club on Tuesday night.

Burton seized early control of the match after narrowly beating his opponent when clearing the pink and black to take the first frame 48-36. With confidence high, Burton shifted into high gear and dominated the second frame with an emphatic 68-21 win to advance to the next round. He will face Tyler Moniz at the same venue next Tuesday.

In league action, Spanish Point Boat Club II and Sandys Boat Club were victorious in the two matches played on Wednesday night.

Spanish Point Boat Club II thumped sister team Spanish Point Boat Club I 4-1.

Billy Wotton thrashed Spanish Point Boat Club I’s Chris Dakin 78-12 in the opening frame to extend his good form of late and Tyler Moniz doubled the advantage after taking down Spanish Point Boat Club I captain Stewart Greenslade 40-31 in an epic frame clinched on the pink and black.

John Orr, the Spanish Point Boat Club II captain and reigning Bermuda Open Champion, then overcame rival Todd Dziak 62-40 in the first of two frames to further tighten his team’s grip on the match before Dziak finally pulled one back for Spanish Point Boat Club I after narrowly getting past Orr on the black.

That was to be as good as it gets for Spanish Point Boat Club I as Wotton and Moniz cruised to a convincing 55-29 win over Greenslade and Alan Smith in the doubles to maintain their team’s three-point lead at the top of the standings.

Reigning champions Sandys Boat Club were also 4-1 winnners after beating Royal Artillery Association.

Sandys jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Peter Bromby beat RAA captain Jacal Washington 52-39 in the first of two frames, but RAA bounced back at the first opportunity when Washington beat Bromby 43-21 in the next frame.

Sandys Boat Club captain Martin Siese regained the lead for the visitors courtesy of a emphatic 82-25 win over rival Jelani Hollis.

Paul Fedden and Bromby then defeated RAA's Kyle Williams and Hollis 48-25 in the doubles to put their side in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 advantage and Fedden went on to seal Sandys Boat Club’s victory after taking down Wiliams in the final frame, 50-18.

The match between Warwick Workmen’s Club II and sister team Warwick Workmen’s I was postponed.
