Racehorse named after Dame Flora Duffy finishes fourth on debut

New addition: Bermuda Thoroughbred Racing has named its latest acquisition Flora of Bermuda, in honour of the Olympic gold medal-winner and four-times world champion triathlete

Bermuda Thoroughbred Racing are hoping to take some inspiration from Dame Flora Duffy after naming their latest acquisition in honour of the Olympic champion.

Flora Of Bermuda was purchased for 340,000 guineas from Longways Stables at the recent Goffs UK Breeze-up sale and was chosen by John Warren, regarded as one of the world’s leading bloodstock advisers.

Trained by Andrew Balding, Flora Of Bermuda has a promising pedigree as a daughter of Dark Angel, a prolific sire who won four of his nine races as a two-year-old, including the St Leger Yearling Stakes and Mill Reef Stakes.

Simon Scupham, the Bermuda Thoroughbred Racing chairman, is hopeful some of Duffy’s “magic dust” will rub off on the horse, who is the latest of a host of Bermuda-themed horses owned by the syndicate including Johnny Barnes, Queen Of Bermuda, Horseshoe Bay and Great Sound.

“We are delighted to have purchased such an exciting filly from the recent breeze-up sale at Goffs UK and have decided to name her Flora Of Bermuda,” Scupham wrote on the BTR Instagram page.

“This is, of course, a nod to the unique Flora found in Bermuda. More importantly, though, it is a recognition of the achievements of Dame Flora Duffy, who is held in such high esteem in Bermuda.

“If a little bit of Flora’s gold dust were to rub off on our filly, that would be just wonderful.”

The two-year-old filly has already shown signs of promise, getting off to an encouraging debut when finishing fourth at Sandown Park, in Surrey, England, this week.

Ridden by James Doyle and wearing pink and navy blue silks, Flora Of Bermuda was sent off at odds of 15-2 in the five-furlong race.

“It was very pleasing and exciting first run for Flora of Bermuda,” Scupham said, following the race. “Her greenness was particularly evident in the final stages of what is a very stiff five furlongs.

“Given what was a very close finish, this probably cost her the race. We have much to look forward to as she has all the makings of a very classy filly.”
